The IrishChamber of Commerce, St. Patrick's Society and Singapore Gaelic Lions will be hosting a joint charity table quiz at Muddy Murphy's pub on Thursday 7th August. Quiz mastered by Paul O'Neill, the evening will kick off at 7.30pm, Our chosen charity is L'Arche, a charity working in a small community in Bangladesh.
To find out more about L'Arche, please see below. Information on L'Arche L'Arche Mymensingh is a community in Bangladesh where people with and without intellectual disability live, work, celebrate and pray together. Now the community has expanded to three homes with 20 residential core members, among these are 7 young adult girls, all of them were abandoned by their families except for a single mother who comes to visit her son a few times a year.
Around 30 core members come everyday from the locality to the Day-Care and the Workshop. More vulnerable core members are supported by weekly home visits by the residential core members. Cultural values and religious beliefs are still strong forces in shaping peoples' attitudes towards people with disabilities (PWD). Social stigma and prejudice is still strong, especially toward PWD's and mental sickness. Government support for PWDs is almost non existent, therefore the yearly budget ( €74k) comes from foreign donations, that in itself is an on-going challenge for the community. The community's most urgent need right now is to buy a house for the girls.
Their home, which is rented, has to be to be vacated by 2015. All of their houses including the workshop are rented and there is a real concern for about the future security of community members. Due to the circumstances in Bangladesh, with such a huge population and so little land available, it will be almost impossible for them to find land available in Mymensingh town in the future. Every $ raised will have a positive direct impact to the running costs & financing of a new house for the community.
